The Morning Commute

So several of you have asked me in email or over Facebook or the blog to show a few more pics of the morning commute. Today I rode no-handed for most of the way to work so that I could capture these shots (Note to self: a larger phone like the LG Nexus combined with the Android OS and soft buttons for 'home' and 'photos' close together is a pain in the but for one-handed use. iOS with single swipe to open the camera and  big, clear photo button and a smaller size has all of the right affordances for single-handed shots).

So, starting closer to home where I enter Parco del Valentino  and working my way to the office, here's what the morning commute looks like from the bike:

Heading down the first little hill in Parco del Valentino toward the  Po River.

The first of several small snack shop/cafe's and dining areas. The tree-canopy was just twigs when we arrived!

The back side of the Castello del Valentino on the right (Valentino Castle --learn more here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castello_del_Valentino)

The first of several boat houses / rowing clubs on either side of the river.

Approaching the Borgo Medievale.

River-side of the Borgo Medievale (we talked about this in a previous post...more info here: http://www.borgomedioevaletorino.it/

Boat landing for sightseeing boats near the Borgo Medievale.

Can you see the Fontana Dei Dodici Mesi (Fountain of the 12 Months) on the hill?

Approaching one of three bridges on the route!

Under the bridge...

If you enlarge this one, you'll see the alps in the distance!

Historic House/Party Barge.

Mud in the path from river over-flow.

Art in the foreground with the National Automobile Museum behind.

Casa Ugi - a sort of localized version of a 'Ronald McDonald' House. It was originally constructed in 1961 for the International Labour Exhibition and clebration of the centenary of the Unification of Italy (same occasions for the construction of the UN campus where I work). The parts on the left hand side used to be the station for a monorail that ran from the pond/fountain adjacent to the Palavela building across from my the UN campus (that building they drove on top of during the original 'Italian Job') to there. It was renovated in prep for the Olympics.

The East Gate to campus...that's only allowed to be opened btw 8 and 10 AM and 4 and 6 PM!

The front side entrance to my building!

  1. That LG camera looks like it's wearing a cyan gel -- must be feeling blue about Samsung and Apple taking all the profits in the handset business. :) But what a marvelous commute. I could get used to that one.

    1. Yeah, not totally thrilled with the camera itself, but it does have some nice filters similar to what you might find in Instagram (none of which have been applied in these photos).

It is truly a beautiful ride, especially on the nice days :) Compare that with the back side of the Hillsboro Airport on my way to work...kinda different!
